Welcome To KFUPM Physics

Welcome to the Department of Physics at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. I invite you to explore our website where you can find information about our academic programs, courses, research activities, and faculty members. Physics has always been at the forefront of exploration. This is accomplished through cognitive enhancement by education transmitted through academic courses as well as carrying out research at the cutting-edge frontiers of human knowledge. The Physics department offer courses that are solidly based on the American system to meet international quality assurance requirements, which has placed the Department as a world-class regional center in a leading international institution. Our student body includes pure-physics students and double-major students, which reflects the interdisciplinary nature of our program. In addition, our research facilities span various fields of physics including condensed matter physics, lasers, materials research, magnetism and superconductivity, nuclear physics, and nonlinear and computational physics. Over the past five decades, our faculty members have conducted research using in-house facilities as well as collaborative research with national and international centers.

SEMINAR

Optical Strategies for Eye Protection from UV Radiation and Other Health Issues

Speaker:
Dr. Fida Al-Adel

Date: Monday, April 13th, 2026
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Location: Bldg. 6/Room 125

Abstract:
This seminar addresses the well-documented hazardous effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on ocular and cutaneous tissues. The speaker will present evidence-based strategies for mitigating UV exposure, considering both direct irradiation and less-explored indirect pathways such as reflection and scattering. Emerging risks associated with modern coherent light sources will also be examined, with emphasis on experimentally validated findings. In addition, the effectiveness of common protective interventions, including UV-filtering eyewear (glasses) and shading devices such as an umbrella, will be critically evaluated. The seminar will further extend to the impact of harmful sound noise exposure, discussing established protective measures alongside recent studies highlighting their broader physiological and health-related implications.

Biography:
Professor Fida F. Al Adel obtained two doctoral degrees from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), supported by scholarships from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). Upon his return to KFUPM, he played a key role in the design of Building 28 and established a state-of-the-art Laser Research Laboratory therein, with strong support from the Rector, H.E. Dr. Bakr bin Bakr. Over the course of his career, Prof. Al Adel has received several national and international awards in recognition of his scientific contributions. His research focuses on molecular spectroscopy, where he has developed advanced supersonic jet expansion systems to generate ultracold molecular beams. This approach enables high-resolution spectroscopic investigations of molecules such as sulfur dioxide, facilitating precise determination and validation of molecular constants and structural parameters. In addition, Prof. Al Adel served as the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to UNESCO in Paris for a period of more than 4 years.

All faculty, researchers and students are invited to attend.
