APPC
The Annual Physics Poster Competition I (APPC-I), organized by the Department of Physics at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), is an annual event designed to bring physics students and faculty closer together from all universities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. APPC-I not only recognizes the academic achievements of young researchers working in the field of physics in the form of prizes and awards, but also fosters a sense of pride and motivation within the physics community in the Kingdom, inspiring contributions to Vision 2030. Your participation and poster presentation in APPC-I will play a pivotal role in making this event a success. Who: This competition is open to both male and female undergraduate and graduate students who have conducted research in any area of physics, including but not limited to condensed matter physics, nonlinear physics, high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and applied physics. The event will also provide a networking opportunity for mentors to interact with students and faculty. APPC FAQ
- Who can participate?
Both male and female undergraduate and graduate (MS and PhD) students who have conducted research in any area of physics, including but not limited to condensed matter physics, nonlinear physics, high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and applied physics.
- Do the undergraduate participants also compete against the graduate participants?
No, there will be separate competitions among undergraduate and graduate students. Consequently, there will also be separate awards for winners among undergraduate students and winners among graduate students. That is, there are six winners in total which comprise of 3 winners at the undergraduate level and 3 winners at the graduate level.
- Can postdocs/researchers also participate?
Currently, only students can participate in the first round of the APPC. We might consider extending the invitations to postdocs and researchers in future APPC events.
- Will this be an individual or a team competition?
APPC will be an individual competition, in the sense that there should only be one presenter. However, as your poster might result from research work that is carried out in a team, you will have the option to include all members in the research team under “Author(s) and their affiliations” in the registration page.
- What is the meaning of “corresponding author” in the registration page?
The corresponding author is typically the leader in the research team, which could be the student’s supervisor, a postdoc, or a graduate student. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss it with their supervisor.
- Is there a word limit for the abstract?
There is no word limit for the abstract. However, you are encouraged to make the abstract as concise as possible to increase your chances of being selected to participate in the event.
- Can a student participate in the event online?
No, the event will take place in the Department of Physics at KFUPM, Dhahran. Poster submission will not be considered if a student does not intend to attend the event physically.
- Does it need to be on the topic I did research on?
The poster should focus on the student’s research topic. As part of the introduction and literature survey, it may include graphics and data from other published research with proper credits and references.
- Can non-physics major students also participate?
Yes, as long as the topic of the student’s poster is related to any area of physics.
- Does the competition include only the poster alone or does it also include the poster’s presentation?
The competition will be based on both the poster and its presentation. The posters will be judged by experts in the fields. Therefore, it is extremely important for the presenters to be present on the day of the event and present their posters when it is their turn.
- Can a student’s supervisor come on site for the event?
Absolutely, it will be a unique networking opportunity for the supervisors to connect with other faculty members and researchers from other universities in the Kingdom.
