Abstract:

Since the last few decades, the concept of a quantum computer has captivated the minds of physicists and non-physicists alike. By harnessing the power of quantum mechanics, a quantum computer is expected to significantly outperform any existing computer in terms of speed and the number of solvable tasks. Unfortunately, no functional quantum computer exists as of today, as its building blocks, the so-called quantum bits (qubits), are extremely sensitive to errors. Topological quantum computing is a field dedicated to creating a resilient platform for storing and manipulating qubits. This is achieved by exploiting special kinds of particles that possess intrinsic topological properties. In my talk, I will present a general overview of this timely field. This includes the general idea of topological quantum computing, progress made in recent years, as well as some of my own contributions to the field.

Bio:

Raditya Weda Bomantara is an Assistant Professor of Physics at KFUPM since September 2022. In late 2017, he received his PhD in Physics from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and won Materials Research Society of Singapore Medal for the best PhD thesis in the Physics Department. After spending three more years at NUS as a full-time Teaching Assistant, during which he won various teaching awards, he moved to the University of Sydney as an independent Research Fellow in early 2020. His current areas of research include theoretical condensed matter physics and quantum computing. He actively collaborates with some research groups in Singapore (including an experimental group at NTU), Australia, and China.

All faculty, researchers and students are invited to attend.
