JOINT SEMINAR WITH THERMOFISHER SCIENTIFIC

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) at KFUPM
Speakers:
Dr. Christopher Deeks. (Channel Manager for XPS for Europe, Middle East and Africa)
Dr. Michael Mannsberger (Head of Sales for EMEA of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Surface Analysis product line)

Date: Monday, 29 May 2023
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Location: Bldg. 6/Room 125

Abstract
This presentation will include an introduction to the technique of XPS and describe how it can be used for a wide range of samples and applications. It will also introduce other complementary techniques that can be added onto XPS systems, for even further investigation of samples. We will then introduce these applications, giving a broad range of examples, such as for batteries, corrosion, energy and catalysis.

We will then give a live demonstration on an XPS system (Escalab) with real-world samples showing the typical throughput of a sample analysis

Biography
Speaker 1: Dr. Christopher Deeks (Channel Manager for XPS for Europe, Middle East and Africa)
Christopher completed his physics degree in 2011 and joined Thermo Fisher Scientific, working as an engineer within the X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) product line. After two years he joined the Applications team for XPS, running sample analyses, product training courses, and attending and presenting at conferences and workshops worldwide. During his time within the applications team, Christopher worked on the full suite of Thermo Scientific XPS tools: K-Alpha, Escalab, Theta Probe and Nexsa.

Speaker 2: Dr. Michael Mannsberger (Head of Sales for EMEA of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Surface Analysis product  line).  Michael holds a PhD in physics. While his PhD was focusing on materials physics, he had done an excursion into medical physics in frame of a Master of Advanced Studies study, however finally returning to materials physics, working for one of the biggest suppliers of analytical equipment on the globe. A few years ago, an MBA was done in parallel to the job. He feels privileged and is looking forward to meeting with brilliant scientists working on exciting applications which can be tackled with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as with adjacent techniques.
