Design and Development of Nanomaterials for Solar Energy Conversion and Built Environment  Applications

Abstract:

The development of renewable, low-cost energy technologies and energy use reduction in built environment is a key scientific challenge for the 21st century. My research group specialized in design, fabrication of nanomaterials by state of art techniques, testing and optimization of nanomaterials for efficient solar energy conversion, storage and built environment applications. Our research of new materials and device concepts aim to elucidate design principles for technological development. Our materials design and fabrication are based "green nanotechnology" with bottom-up or top-down synthesis strategies to reduce energy consumption and waste generation during synthesis process. The material development research focus on two area, the first is the development of new chemical approaches to solar energy conversion: harnessing solar energy either to produce electricity (photovoltaics) and solar fuels (e.g., hydrogen from water splitting) through photoelectrochemical or eleytorlysis techniques. The second are of research is materials for building energy efficiency energy efficacy and visual comfort by developing smart composite material in which each element of composite will bring a unique property to composite to contribute to enhance energy efficiency of windows and facades. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight our latest efforts in the field of material discovery, design and low-cost fabrication to realize the large scale H2 production and smart composite to improve building energy efficiency.

Short bio:

Prof. Asif Tahir is Associate Professor and Director of Research in Renewable Energy at Department of Engineering, University of Exeter (UoE). He has secured research funding (>10m) as PI and CoI for various research projects. He is specialized in the fabrication of nanomaterials using state-of-the-art techniques for solar energy conversion and building energy efficiency. His research focus on energy material design, green hydrogen production, electrochemical energy storage, thermal energy storage, device characterisation and optimisation of device for high performance. He has published 115 peer-reviewed research papers in high impact journals and one book chapter. His publication has received an overall citation of 5630 and his h-index is 38.
